PREP ROUNDUP : Edison Girls Upset Fifth-Ranked Esperanza in Soccer
Nicole Price, Loree Tamanaha and Stephanie Mocske scored to lead unranked Edison to a 3-1 upset of fifth-ranked Esperanza in a Sunset League girls’ soccer opener Thursday at Esperanza.
Edison is 4-5-3. Chris Bumstead scored the only goal for Esperanza (10-4-2, 0-1).
In another Sunset League game:
Fountain Valley 3, Huntington Beach 1--Kim Green and Sharon Gillis scored in the second half for ninth-ranked Fountain Valley (13-1-2, 1-0).
In the Freeway League:
Sonora 1, Fullerton 0--Heather Gibson scored the winning goal 10 minutes into second half for Sonora (7-3-3, 1-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 6, Garden Grove 0--Alanah Brown and Terri Emmons had two goals each for visiting Pacifica (2-3, 2-0).
Santiago 4, Bolsa Grande 1--Azucena Figueroa scored three goals as Santiago (1-6, 1-0) gained its first victory since starting the program last season.
In the Golden West League:
Westminster 1, Santa Ana 0--Amber Lynch scored for visiting Westminster (5-1, 1-0).
In the Orange League:
Magnolia 4, Savanna 0--Misty Richards scored two goals for the Sentinels and Becky Young added a goal and an assist for host Magnolia (5-7, 1-0).
Valencia 4, Western 2--Jessica Wilson scored three goals and Rachel Ferrari added another for visiting Valencia (2-4-3, 1-0).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Aliso Niguel 1, Laguna Hills 0--Freshman Nicole Basanda scored her team-high sixth goal in the 75th minute, and sophomore Kirsten Roy had 19 saves to record her eighth shutout for Aliso Niguel (10-2-1, 1-0).
In the Sea View League:
El Toro 4, Corona del Mar 0--Mandi Lashmett scored her seventh goal and Kelly Sawdon, Kristi Bracha and Anne Vicker also scored for El Toro (7-5-3, 1-0).
Santa Margarita 3, Woodbridge 1--Erika DeVitis, Annie Luke and Meagan Lingo scored for fourth-ranked Santa Margarita (11-4-1, 1-0).
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 8, San Clemente 0--Beth Merkle scored five goals to give Mission Viejo (12-4-1, 1-0) the victory.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Villa Park 1, Cypress 1--Brad Dunaway scored the tying goal midway through the second half for host Cypress (10-2-2). Villa Park goalkeeper Sean Bartko had seven saves and also scored the Spartans’ goal on a first-half penalty kick.
In Sunset League field hockey:
Santiago 1, Edison 0--Brandi Owen scored on an assist from Camelia Rodriguez for host Santiago (10-2-2, 5-0), which took over first place in league. Edison is 3-1 in league.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Mater Dei 83, Cerritos Gahr 51--Schea Cotton scored a game-high 30 points and had 12 rebounds for top-ranked Monarchs (18-1). Clay McKnight added 20 points, including six three-pointers and reserve Mike Vukovich had 12 rebounds, three block shots and six points.
In Century League wrestling:
Villa Park 36, Canyon 31--Villa Park heavyweight Dan DeClark recorded a pin in 5:41 to win the meet for Villa Park (2-0, 1-0). It was Villa Park’s first victory against Canyon since 1981.
In the Golden West League:
Saddleback 51, Ocean View 17--Ralph Lucero pinned his opponent in 2 minutes 15 seconds to lead Saddleback (8-4-1, 1-0). Ocean View is 0-1 in league.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 66, Aliso Niguel 0--The fourth-ranked Hawks (11-2, 1-0) recorded seven victories by pin in their league opener.
In the Sunset League:
Los Alamitos 58, Marina 12--Senior Rico Santiago scored a 14-2 major decision for Los Alamitos (7-0, 1-0) in the 130-pound class. Teammate Jeremey Medina pinned his opponent in 1:23 at 152.
