GIRLS’ BASKETBALL / FREEWAY LEAGUE : Troy’s Shah Leads the Way to Victory

Watching senior point guard Dinah Shah take over a game is becoming old hat for Troy girls’ basketball Coach Brad Sand.

So it came as no surprise when Shah scored six of the Warriors’ eight points in the fourth quarter, helping Troy to a 36-30 victory over visiting La Habra Tuesday night.

The victory moved Troy into sole possession of first place in the Freeway League standings, one game ahead of the Highlanders.

“They tried to double-team her, but she has the quickness to get through the gaps,” Sand said. “It’s nice to have someone that you can say ‘Here, go out and do it.’ ”

Shah’s first basket of the game broke Troy’s third-quarter drought with 4 minutes 40 seconds left. The Warriors (13-5, 4-0) were two for 12 in the quarter.

Shah dominated the final quarter, making four of seven free throws and setting up center Jennie Gadd, who scored with two minutes left to secure the victory.

The Highlanders (10-7, 3-1), trailed, 24-12, at halftime but closed to 28-27 when Aimee Weathers hit a three-point basket with 7:30 left in the third quarter.
