PACIFIC 10 CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : Oregon Gets Back On Track at Seattle

Orlando Williams scored 12 of his 26 points in the last five minutes as No. 17 Oregon pulled away to beat Washington, 92-83, Saturday in Seattle.

Beaten at Washington State on Thursday night, the Ducks, 12-2 and 4-1 in the Pacific 10, outscored the Huskies, 17-5, in the final 4:44.

“We knew this was a must-win situation,” said Williams, who made eight free throws and two baskets in the closing minutes.

Trailing, 78-75, after two free throws by David Hawken with 4:54 remaining, Oregon got two free throws from Williams with 4:44 to go and went ahead to stay, 79-78, on a 16-footer by Williams with 4:06 left.

“Williams made the right plays and the big plays down the stretch,” said Washington (5-9, 1-5) Coach Bob Bender. “I think that’s the sign of a really good player.”

Kenya Wilkins tied his career-high with 23 points for Oregon.

Washington State 77, Oregon State 75--Mark Hendrickson scored a game-high 26 points as the Cougars held off a second-half comeback by the Beavers at Pullman, Wash.

Oregon State (4-10, 1-4) had a chance to win with a last-second three-point attempt, but Stephane Brown’s shot from the top of the key banged off the back of the rim.

The Cougars (8-5, 4-2) extended their home-court winning streak to 10 games, dating to last season. Oregon State lost for the eighth time in its last nine games.

Hendrickson, the Pac-10’s leader in field-goal percentage, made 10 of 12 shots from the field and all five of his free throws.

Mustapha Hoff, the Pac-10’s second-leading scorer, led the Beavers with 21 points, 11 of them from free throws. Brent Barry scored 19 for Oregon State.
