AUSCHWITZ : Horror Remembered

Survivors of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz will gather Thursday with Polish officials and dignitaries from around the world to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death camp’s liberation by the Soviet Red Army in World War II.

The main ceremonies, to be held Thursday and Friday at the southern Polish town of Oswiecim (the German name was Auschwitz) and in nearby Krakow, will be hosted by Polish President Lech Walesa.

Some Jewish organizations outside Poland, insisting they were not sufficiently consulted about the program, plan separate ceremonies at nearby Birkenau, part of the Auschwitz complex of camps and site of the notorious crematories.
