Ladera Vista Names King Speech Winners

Ladera Vista Junior High School has announced the winners of a speech contest held in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

More than 70 students competed, outlining their dreams for the future. Students spoke about their hopes for a drug-, violence- and gang-free world where racism doesn’t exist.

Winners are: Sophia Reynolds, Lindsey Finch, Manuel Lopez, Lori Judd, Katie Freeman, Sarah Daniel, Leah Barcus, Marianne Evaldez, Juan Mendoza, Mari Louise Juslin, Josh Foster and Randy Schroeder. They will receive trophies at the school’s award assembly in June.

Council Salutes New Eagle Scout

The City Council has passed a resolution praising James DeForrest Campbell for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Campbell is a member of Boy Scout Troop 295 and attends Cypress High School.

Campbell has earned eight Boy Scout Skill Awards and 21 Merit Badges. He is a graduate of the Oakleaf Junior Leader Training Program.

Foothill Student to Go to Leadership Forum

Darcy Staniford, a Foothill High School student, has been chosen to attend the National Young Leaders Conference this month in Washington.

The conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Darcy will be the only Orange County student to attend.

10-Year-Old Wins Miss Pre-Teen Title

Crystal Star Matsumoto, 10, recently won the Miss Pre-Teen title at a national Cities of America beauty pageant.

Crystal, who lives in La Habra and is a fifth-grade student at Christ Lutheran School in Brea, bested 100 other contestants from throughout the country.

CASA Festivity to Honor Junior League

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County, will host the second annual “Celebration of Children” on Feb. 10 to honor the Junior League of Orange County as its “Children’s Champion of ’95.”

The Junior League created CASA in 1985 to benefit abused youths. It will be honored for its dedication to the care and support of abused and neglected children throughout the county.

The celebration will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Sutton Place Hotel in Newport Beach.

Tickets are $75 per person. Proceeds will benefit CASA.
