LA HABRA : Trustees OK Policy of Involving Parents

The La Habra City School District has given initial approval to a policy that would include parents in the planning of instructional programs.

District officials said parent involvement in the education of their children is critical for effective schooling. They said that when a parent cares about their child’s education, the child’s motivation can rise along with academic success.

Under the policy, schools would be required to design programs that would do the following:

* Help parents develop and enhance parenting skills.

* Encourage parents to help their children study at home.

* Provide a setting for two-way communication with parents.

* Involve parents in instructional and support roles at school.

* Use parent leadership in advisory and advocacy roles.

* Encourage parent participation in student and community events involving ethnic diversity.

School board members are expected to give final approval to the policy next month.
