THE GOODS : A Chance to Hang With the Best of ‘Em

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It’s been a while since a new coat hanger has been seen on the market, but now there’s the Freedom Hanger for suits. Its sculpture-like design lets pants hang on the outside of the jacket, so the jacket stays neatly in place when you want to remove the pants.

According to the hanger’s designer, Philip McDowell of McDowell Bros. in Laguna Hills, the jacket hanger is also constructed at an angle so the shoulders of the jacket hang properly and with less wrinkling. It is sturdily made of hardwood and aluminum.

Freedom Hanger ($11-$13) is available in Bed Bath and Beyond stores in eight cities: the Olympic Boulevard store in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Downers Grove and Deerfield, Ill., New York, Paramus, N.J. and Sunrise, Fla. Or you can order from McDowell Bros. at (800) 450-5085.

Making Your Radio Do Double Duty

Here’s a clever little device for all you trial watchers, soap fanatics or network news hounds to at least hear your show. It’s TELEmate, a cordless accessory that turns any AM/FM radio into a no-see TV.

The pocket-sized TELEmate receives all local UHF/VHF television broadcasts and transmits the audio so you can hear your programs when you’re not near a TV. It works in your car, at the office, at the beach, on a golf course or anywhere else radios go.

Just introduced by Econologic Technologies in Palo Alto, TELEmate transmits via a small internal magnetic antenna. It receives all TV channels from 2 through 69.

TELEmate ($69.95) runs on two AA batteries and requires no installation. Place it within 12 feet of a radio, select the desired TV channel on the unit’s digital tuner and set your radio dial to 88.7 FM or another blank frequency. (TELEmate is preset to air over 88.7 FM, but can be changed to a blank frequency if 88.7 FM is an occupied radio station in your area.) TELEmate also has an external power jack for use with a DC power source.

TELEmate accessories, sold separately, provide for added mobility. A Clip-it-Anywhere kit ($9.95) permits easy attachment to a belt, car visor or car window; a 12-volt to 3-volt DC power adapter ($9.95) plugs into the car cigarette lighter; also there’s a carrying case ($11.95).

To order TELEmate, contact Econologic at (800) 662-8895.
