The number of freshman black athletes participating in college sports has increased after a drop following the enactment of Proposition 48 eligibility standards, the NCAA said. Proposition 48 has been a divisive issue in the NCAA since it took effect in 1986. The Black Coaches Assn. has been particularly strident in its opposition, threatening last basketball season to boycott games unless the proposition was changed.
Baseball is heading to southern Europe in the form of a new professional women’s league founded by the people who run the Silver Bullets women’s team in the United States. The Mediterranean Baseball League--with two teams each in Spain, France and Italy--will be made up of the best players out of more than 2,500 who tried out for the Silver Bullets in the last year.
Team New Zealand left oneAustralia skipper John Bertrand in the drink as it sailed to its ninth consecutive victory in the America’s Cup challenger trials off San Diego. As the yachts were dousing their spinnakers at the end of the downwind second leg, Bertrand, the 1983 America’s Cup winner, lost his balance on the port rail and fell into the ocean.
