SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 56-year-old woman was killed Friday morning by a motorist who apparently did not see her walking across the street, authorities said.

Mingmei Chen Hsieh of Canyon Country was crossing Whites Canyon Road at Nadal Street to get to a bus stop about 6 a.m., said Deputy Robert Bullard of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

A pickup truck driven by William Maryon, 34, of Canyon Country was waiting at a red light as Hsieh walked across the crosswalk on the far side of the intersection. “His light turned green and he immediately accelerated without seeing the pedestrian, who was coming from the left,” Bullard said.

Witnesses told deputies that Hsieh may have been running across the street as the traffic signal for her direction turned red, according to a report by Sgt. Steve Mulcahy.

Maryon was driving about 25 m.p.h. when he struck Hsieh, who was thrown headfirst into a curb, Bullard said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup driver was allowed to leave the scene, but investigators were still determining Friday if charges will be filed against him, Bullard said.
