Formula Approved to Fund Rail Service

The Ventura County Transportation Commission on Friday approved a formula under which cities would help fund Metrolink service.

The panel voted 6 to 1 to adopt a proposal that would determine how much each of the county’s 10 cities may have to contribute to continue Metrolink rail service for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

The commission will use the formula only if is short of money to finance the county’s rail service.

The commission will know in April or May, when the Metrolink budget is scheduled to be reviewed, whether it will need to ask the cities for contributions.

Each city’s contribution will be based in part on its population and the number of residents who live near Metrolink stations. The county’s rail stations are located in Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark and Simi Valley.

County Supervisor Frank Schillo, a member of the commission, voted against the formula, arguing that it was unfair to cities like Thousand Oaks and Port Hueneme, which do not have a train station but could pay as much as cities having the stations.
