COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Garland’s Triple Double Leads Canyons

Canyons freshman Kerri Garland had a triple double, including a school-record 10 blocked shots, as the Cowboys beat Santa Monica, 71-49, in a Western State Conference South Division game Saturday night at Santa Monica.

Garland added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Canyons (24-5, 6-0), which won its 17th game in a row against a WSC South Division opponent.

Glendale 66, Bakersfield 64--The host Vaqueros (5-18, 2-4) escaped with a WSC South Division victory when a Bakersfield player missed an eight-foot jump shot at the buzzer.

Keri Peterson scored 23 points and Heidi Landiana added 11 for Glendale.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale 89, Bakersfield 76--Maurice Sowells scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Glendale (13-12, 3-3) beat Bakersfield in a WSC game at Glendale.

Cal Lutheran 84, Redlands 76--Paul LaMott had 30 points and 14 rebounds and Mark Heerema added 29 points for Cal Lutheran in an SCIAC victory at Redlands.

Moorpark 93, Cuesta 75--Twin brothers Paul and Nick Foster scored 24 points apiece for the Raiders (18-9, 2-3) in a WSC North Division game at Moorpark.

BASEBALL

Canyons 5, Cerritos 2; Fullerton 15, Canyons 8--Bobby Cowan allowed three hits and walked one in six innings for Canyons (1-1) in the victory over Cerritos in round-robin play of the Fullerton-Cerritos tournament.

Center fielder Kyle Lonsberry had a run-scoring triple in the first inning and scored two runs against Cerritos to give Canyons Coach Len Mohney his 200th victory. Lonsberry also had two hits against Fullerton (2-0).

Mission 5, Golden West 0; East L.A. 9, Mission 2--Right-hander Raymond Rivera pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out three and walking one, for Mission (1-1) in a season-opening victory in round-robin play of the Harbor tournament. Rivera threw just 106 pitches.

Art Diaz’s two-run double and three Golden West errors in the third inning provided all the runs Rivera would need.

Three Free Spirit pitchers gave up 12 hits and Mission made three errors in the loss to East L.A.

Oxnard 15, Compton 5; Oxnard 10, L.A. City 7--Scott Foli’s two-run single broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the eighth inning, leading Oxnard (3-1) to a victory over L.A. City in the Citrus-Rio Hondo tournament.

Jason Young was three for five in the second game.

In the first game, Art Bolen led Oxnard with three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.
