GRANADA HILLS : Architect Picked for Van Gogh School
The Los Angeles school board has selected an architect to design the reconstruction of Van Gogh Elementary, the only school in the district that was completely destroyed by the Northridge earthquake.
Kazumi Adachi & Associates Inc. won the bid at $4.65 million to “replace existing earthquake damaged facilities” at Van Gogh, according to a report submitted Friday by the Board of Education.
To provide any additional reconstruction services, Ellerbe Becket Inc. will be paid $22,560.40. A total of about $6 million has been allocated to Van Gogh Street Elementary to rebuild the campus.
Damaged buildings will be completely demolished and new buildings will be erected in their place, said Julie Crum, director of the design and construction branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“Then they are going to build about the same amount of square footage,” she said, adding that Van Gogh Street’s new campus will have more--but smaller--buildings on deeper foundations than previous structures.
The architects and the district’s project manager will be presenting three design plans to the community and school for approval, she said. Crum said the campus will be reopened for the fall semester of 1998.
At present, the Van Gogh Street students attend class in portable buildings at Frost Middle School.
