The City Council has approved plans for two large buildings for two new businesses on Doheny Park Road.

The businesses, Staples and Petsmart, are scheduled to replace a pair of smaller buildings in the Price Club center.

The Price Club will not be affected.

Two existing buildings in the center will be demolished to make way for the new tenants, and a third building will be partially torn down to create more room for parking.

The council voted Tuesday to approve the project, which drew no opposition.

Council members said that the new businesses were a welcome addition to the city.

Council members also acknowledged that the Price Club center, as originally developed in 1987, had not lived up to economic expectations.

Laurie Price, a consultant for Price Enterprises, told the council that the company had “high hopes” for the center when it was first built.

She said the new plan for the center was much better, given the economic changes.

“I think it will be more successful than it is now,” Price said of the project.

Under the plan, Staples, an office supply business, will be 20,117 square feet.

Petsmart, an animal supply business that also sells fish and birds, will be 26,575 square feet.
