THE PREPS : GIRLS’ BASKETBALL / SUNSET LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Marina Beats Edison, Ties for Second
Marina went on a 17-4 run in the first half en route to a 65-58 girls’ basketball victory over host Edison Thursday night, giving Marina a tie for second with the Chargers in the Sunset League.
Kirsten Cappel broke a 6-6 tie with a field goal and Shandy Robbins followed with six consecutive points for a 14-6 lead. Norie Nakase hit two three-pointers and Natalie Nakase one as the Vikings built a 23-10 lead early in the second quarter and weren’t threatened again.
“Those outside shots add another dimension to our offense,” Marina Coach Pete Bonny said.
Marina, with a 49-48 victory over Edison earlier this season, will enter next week’s Southern Section playoffs as the Sunset League’s designated second-place entry; Edison will be third. Both teams finished with 6-4 league records, 18-6 overall.
Marie Philman scored 27 for Edison, but was held to 10 points in the first three quarters.
All five Marina starters scored in double figures, with Robbins leading with 24 points and Norie Nakase scoring 11. Natalie Nakase, Cappel and Sonya Bryant each had 10.
