VENTURA : School District Seeks $200,000 in Lost Aid
- Share via
Ventura school officials are asking the state to reimburse the district for about $200,000 in funding lost last month when several campuses closed due to flooding and water contamination.
Six schools on the city’s western end closed Jan. 10 when torrential rains caused street flooding and made some roads impassable.
Three days later, 12 schools in the same area were closed after officials said the city’s water supply was contaminated as a result of storm water entering the filtration system.
School administrators will ask the Board of Education on Tuesday to approve a petition to the state seeking payment of the $200,000 lost as a result of the school closures.
Public schools receive state funding based on the average number of students attending each day. Ventura Unified became eligible to apply for the waiver when Gov. Pete Wilson declared the region a disaster area.
Approval of the petition by the board and the state is expected. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the community room at Ventura City Hall.
