Employer Sentenced Over Hiring of Immigrants: The first Southland employer convicted of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants was ordered to perform 500 hours of community service, fined $1,500 and was placed on three years probation. Maria Leticia Ruiz de Cruz, the ex-manager of a Los Angeles-based medical clinic, also received a stern lecture from U.S. District Judge Lourdes Baird for exploiting doctors who are in the United States illegally, and taking opportunities away from Latino physicians in the country legally.
