As part of Heart Month activities, the Hoag Heart Institute has scheduled a series of classes and programs throughout February aimed helping prevent the nation’s No. 1 killer, heart disease.

Sponsored for the last eight years by Toshiba America Cos. of Southern California, Heart Month will feature heart-disease prevention classes, low-fat cooking demonstrations, cholesterol screenings and weight-loss and exercise plans.

“Heart Month activities teach people ways to change their lifestyle in order to help prevent heart disease,” said Dr. Joel Manchester, the medical director of cardiology at Hoag Heart Institute. “Incorporating these lifestyle guides into their daily routine . . . can help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and other risk factors that are damaging to the heart.”

The classes will take place at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Hoag Health Centers in Irvine and Huntington Beach, and South Coast Plaza’s Crystal Court. The majority of classes are free, and all are taught by Hoag physicians and health experts.
