John Koehler just finished another successful season as La Habra’s girls’ basketball coach. His Highlanders won a share of their 16th Freeway League title. But this season, Koehler coached his daughter, Brooke.
She was averaging 11.3 points heading into last week’s games and the Highlanders (17-7) improved Koehler’s career record to 324-80.
Said the county’s winningest active girls’ basketball coach: “She might have been a superstar if she had played for somebody else, but she’s so concerned about not letting me down. It’s been my privilege to coach her.”

Mater Dei girls’ basketball Coach Mary Hauser, who graduated from Mater Dei in 1985 as Mary Gainey, credited her sister, Geri Gainey (a 1987 graduate), for much of the Monarchs’ success this season, including its 62-36 victory over Brea Olinda.
“She’s in charge of the defense and she deserves a lot of the credit,” Hauser said. “We constantly switched defenses (against Brea) and I think we confused them. The kids say that offense wins games and defense wins championships. Defense is going to win the big game.”
Mater Dei plays the first of its big postseason games on Saturday.
