THOUSAND OAKS : City Donates Cash to Eco-Friendly Firms
Backing a new approach to keep environmentally friendly ventures alive, the Thousand Oaks City Council approved a $15,000 contribution to a group of area merchants.
The Thousand Oaks Environmental Business Cluster would house as many as 20 small businesses in an 11,000-square-foot building loaned by GTE on Lombard Street.
The group needs $125,000 to open the shared business space, which is being renovated by GTE. Companies that use recycled products, create software for environmental programs or otherwise improve the environment will be allowed to use the building at discounted rental rates.
Tenants will share access to data banks and libraries across the country, and bookkeeping and word processing services will be provided.
In 1994 the council approved a $15,000 allocation of federal block grants to the project, but organizers say they need $150,000 more to finish the building.
The new allocation may come from either 1995 federal block grants or Solid Waste Recycling Funds, said Olav Hassel, city housing services manager.
With the City Council’s contribution and private donations, the group has raised $50,000 toward its goal.
