COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Maryland Falls to Wake Forest

Tony Rutland came off the bench to lead No. 14 Wake Forest to a 63-54 victory over No. 7 Maryland on Wednesday night at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Rutland replaced an ineffective Randolph Childress to start the second half and scored eight points in an 11-2 run that gave the Demon Deacons, 16-5 overall and 7-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a 53-41 lead with 8:41 to play. Rutland finished with 19 points. Maryland is 19-5, 9-3.

No. 8 Michigan State 68, Illinois 58--In the Big Ten, Shawn Respert scored 35 points, including eight three-pointers, and Eric Snow had 12 assists to lead the Wolverines (18-3, 10-2) past the Illini (16-8, 7-5) at East Lansing, Mich.

No. 10 Arkansas 86, No. 18 Alabama 80--Scotty Thurman scored 29 points and Corliss Williamson added 24 and the Razorbacks (20-5, 8-4) beat Alabama (17-6, 7-4) in a Southeastern Conference game at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

No. 16 Virginia 64, Duke 58--Junior Burrough had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Harold Deane had 12 points in the second half to lead the Cavaliers (17-6, 9-3) past the Blue Devils (11-13, 1-11) in an ACC game at Charlottesville, Va.

No. 17 Stanford 83, California 70--Dion Cross scored 18 points and Brevin Knight added 16 and 12 assists as Stanford (16-5, 7-5) beat California (12-9, 4-8) in a Pacific 10 game at Palo Alto.

No. 20 Georgia Tech 85, North Carolina A&T; 81--Travis Best scored 27 points and freshman Matt Harpring added 21 and 11 rebounds as the Yellowjackets (16-8) beat the Aggies (10-12) at Atlanta.

No. 22 Oklahoma State 71, No. 21 Iowa State 69--Bryant Reeves scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half, leading Oklahoma State (17-7, 7-2) to a Big Eight victory over Iowa State (18-7, 4-6) at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa 74, No. 24 Minnesota 70--Chris Kingsbury had 25 points for Iowa (15-9, 5-7) against Minnesota (16-7, 7-4) in a Big Ten game at Minneapolis.

No. 25 Purdue 71, Penn State 51--Cuonzo Martin had 14 points to lead Purdue (17-6, 8-3) over Penn State (13-8, 5-6) in a Big Ten game at West Lafayette, Ind.
