Castaic Freeway Crash Injures 2 Drivers
A wrong-way motorist from Reseda crashed head-on into another driver’s vehicle early Thursday in Castaic, injuring the two men, who are both suspected of driving under the influence, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Lottermoser said Eric Lothrop of Reseda was traveling south on the northbound side of the Golden State Freeway near Lake Hughes Road about 3:20 a.m. when his vehicle collided with Don Sarbeck, who was driving in the proper direction.
Lothrop’s car was traveling at 65 m.p.h. when it struck Sarbeck’s head-on. Both injured men were in the intensive care unit at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia Thursday afternoon, Lottermoser said. Hospital officials declined to release their conditions.
The wreckage of the two cars closed down two lanes of the freeway for 90 minutes.
Lottermoser said both Lothrop, 27, and Sarbeck, 38, of Cypress, are suspected of driving under the influence. He said Sarbeck was wearing his seat belt; Lothrop was not.
