Dole Nominates Ex-Gen. Robles to Base Closure Panel

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) named the former commander at a Kansas army installation to the military base closure panel after the White House blocked his initial choice.
Dole said Friday that Joe Robles Jr., a retired major general, is his new choice for the Base Closure and Realignment Commission. The Clinton Administration, with no explanation, has refused to nominate former Army Secretary Michael P. W. Stone, who was Dole’s first pick.
Robles a 28-year Army veteran, is now chief financial officer for USAA Financial Services in San Antonio, Tex.
