Mario Reiter of Austria scored his first World Cup victory, winning giant slalom at Furano, Japan.

Alberto Tomba of Italy, whose seven-slalom winning streak ended on Sunday, missed a turn on his second run n the giant slalom as he pressed to make up for a slight deficit on his first run.

Team New Zealand, skippered by Russell Coutts, handed John Bertrand’s new oneAustralia its first loss in a close race off San Diego and continued to dominate he challenger series in the America’s Cup trials.

The other New Zealand yacht, NZL-39, beat Sydney 95 and France 3 defeated Rioja de Espana.

On the defender course, Kevin Mahaney’s Young America took advantage of a wind shift on the first leg and beat America3, the all-women team.

The French training yacht France 2 capsized about seven miles off the coast after it lost its keel in 15 knot winds. The 13 crew members were not injured and the yacht was saved.
