Both Sides Now

The Port Hueneme City Council meeting of Feb. 1 saw Councilman Orvene Carpenter admonish some sign-toting attendees with a tongue-lashing. Does the councilman speak out of both sides of his mouth? Does he remember a couple of years ago at a hearing wherein many of the signs carried into the council chamber said, “Outsiders go home”? This was, obviously, a reference to the Surfside Beach area people. Carpenter, who was then mayor, did nothing to speak against this display.
Carpenter is a holdover councilman whose prior election wins have been the result of voter apathy. He was among the previous council members who allowed the city manager to manipulate and divide the citizens, backed the city manager’s constant “doom and gloom” fiscal crisis message, allowed the city manager to manipulate the council, and allowed the council to abrogate its authority to the city manager.
Port Hueneme citizens deserve better.
