STATE OF LAGUNA: Fire, floods, landslides, earthquakes, political upheaval and downtown crime, Laguna Beach has had it all. Mayor Kathleen Blackburn says a city like that ought to have an annual “State of the City” report for its residents. Councilman Paul Freeman calls it “an awesome idea.”. . . . But not so Councilman Wayne J. Baglin. He says city leaders should tend to city business, not become “authors.” The city staff has been directed to study preparation and mailing costs for such a report.
DISNEY DEVOTION: How popular are those 40 trading cards Disneyland is passing out to visitors--one per day--to celebrate its 40th anniversary?. . . . Northridge stockbroker Ted Haulley is driving to the Anaheim park daily--nearly 100 miles round trip--and will until the promotion ends March 2. . . . “I don’t really care what they’re worth,” he says. “I would just like to say that I had them all.”
DOES IT ALL: Steve Allen’s public appearances include jazz concerts, comedy spots, talk shows, book promotions--and helping out the homeless. Allen is donating his time to speak at an annual authors and book luncheon benefit for a shelter Thursday at the Sutton Place Hotel in Newport Beach. . . . “He’s Mr. Renaissance man,” says Judy Cooper of the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter. “We wrote him who we were; he wrote back he’d be delighted to help out. We’re thrilled.” . . . . The 60-day shelter in Costa Mesa is for families only.
OLDER PANTHERS: Most Cal State Fullerton students weren’t even born when Eldridge Cleaver and Bobby Seale made news as members of the militant Black Panther party nearly 30 years ago. But Alexander Tijerina of the school’s student-run speaker series says the two still have an important message. . . . They both speak tonight at Titan Pavilion on campus. Says Tijerina: “A lot of people then saw them as these gun-wielding guys ticked off at everything. But they did good things too.”
