Long Beach Poly, the defending Southern Section Division I-AA basketball champion, is among seven area schools alive in the boys’ divisional playoffs.

Damion Dawson scored 24 points and added 24 rebounds to lift the Jackrabbits to a 55-40 second-round victory over Simi Valley.

Poly (18-9) plays Upland in a quarterfinal Friday, and St. John Bosco meets Westlake in another Division I-AA matchup.

Other Friday quarterfinals include: Gahr versus Trabuco Hills in Division II-AA, Dominguez versus Pacific in Division II-A, and Artesia versus Bishop Montgomery and Centennial versus Sonora in Division III-AA.

Pius X plays Serra in a Division IV-A semifinal game Friday. The Warriors are coming off a 39-38 quarterfinal victory over Santa Clara Tuesday on a three-point basket Troy Collins.

The win avenged a two-point loss to the Saints in the second round of the playoffs last season and a loss to Santa Clara in the 1992 IV-A final.

* Jodi Parriott had 27 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and five assists as Valley Christian continued its quest for its fourth consecutive Southern Section title with a 68-34 quarterfinal victory over Bell-Jeff in a Division IV-A quarterfinal.

Tandee Taylor had 18 points and Crystal Rosenthal contributed seven assists for Valley Christian (19-3), which plays Cantwell-Sacred Heart in a semifinal contest Saturday.

In quarterfinal action Saturday night, Long Beach Poly will play Victor Valley in Division I-AA, and Downey will meet Chino and Cerritos will take on Fountain Valley in Division I-A.

* Glenn High won its second team title in three seasons Saturday in the Division IV individual wrestling finals at Santiago High.

Miguel Soto (130 pounds), Fo-Fo Dominguez (140), Monico Enriquez, Ray Granillo (189 pounds) and Willie Henderson (heavyweight) all won individual titles for the Eagles, who totaled 221 points. Highland and Mira Costa were second and third with 143 and 142.5, respectively.

Pablo Sanchez of St. John Bosco beat Chad Reynoso of Glenn to win the 103-pound title.

Millikan placed fourth in the Division III finals at Downey High. Dan Carter became the first Millikan wrestler to win an individual title in 10 years, defeating Joey Davis of Temescal Canyon, 17-2, in the 147-pound final. Makell Murphy (154) and Dan Moyer were fourth and heavyweight Kelly Richardson was fifth for Millikan.

Montebello, paced by the runner-up finish of David Delgado in the 121-pound division, placed fifth in the Division II championships at A.B. Miller High.

* Long Beach Jordan and Lakewood will square off in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division II boys’ soccer playoffs today.

Top-seeded Jordan (16-2-4) defeated Bishop Montgomery, 1-0, in the second round Tuesday.

Lakewood (14-7-2) defeated Rio Mesa, 3-2, in overtime on a goal by Kevin Hamilton after rallying from a 2-0 deficit with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Pioneer will play St. Francis in a Division III quarterfinal.

* The Long Beach Poly girls’ soccer team defeated South Torrance, 2-1, in overtime and Mayfair beat Westridge, 7-0, Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section playoffs. Poly (16-4-4) will play Redlands in Division II and Mayfair (21-3-4) will take on Ayala in Division III.

Poly defeated second-seeded Ocean View, 1-0, in the first round Saturday on a goal by Shannon Donnelly. Goalkeeper Cheri Phillips made 12 saves.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Cerritos College men’s basketball team is seeded second and defending state champion Long Beach City is fifth in the 32-team Southern California Regional playoffs.

Cerritos (29-1) will play host to Compton in the first round Friday, and Long Beach (24-8) will meet Cypress at home Saturday.

Cerritos defeated El Camino, 132-75, in its regular-season finale to finish 10-0 in South Coast Conference play.

The 132 points scored is the third-highest in school history. Sophomore guard Eric Barnes made seven of eight shots from the field for a career-high 21 points and sophomore center Darius Rutledge had 20 points and 17 rebounds.

Wayne Allen added 19 points and Kelly Hambrick, Joey Gorini and David Henry scored 15 each.

Allen and Cerritos Coach Jack Bogdanovich were selected the South Coast Conference player and coach of the year.

Allen, a sophomore from Pasadena, averaged 16.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in conference play.

Bogdanovich has guided the Falcons to eight conference titles in 13 seasons and a 354-37 record during that span.

* Long Beach City and Cerritos, which finished in a tie for second in South Coast Conference play, are seeded seventh and ninth in the 20-team women’s Southern California Regional playoffs.

Long Beach (18-8) will play host to Saddleback (16-10) in a second-round game tonight and Cerritos (21-10) will play at Citrus (22-9) in a rematch of a 71-63 defeat to the Owls earlier this season.

Sarah Coleman and Babita Singh of Cerritos were selected to the All-South Coast Conference team.

Coleman grabbed 13 rebounds to eclipse the school record for rebounds in a season in an 88-67 victory over El Camino in the regular-season finale. The sophomore center has 320 rebounds to break the mark of 317 set by Kate Larrabee last season.

Coleman, who averaged 17.1 points and 10.9 rebounds during conference play, also scored 29 points and had four steals against El Camino. Singh, a freshman from Glenn High, averages 14.1 points and 2.5 steals.

BEACH BALL

The Long Beach State men’s basketball team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 75-61, Saturday to extend its conference winning streak to eight games.

The winning streak is the 49ers’ longest since the 1973-74 season, when Long Beach was 12-0 as a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.

The victory also marked the first sweep of UC Santa Barbara in 12 seasons. The 49ers earlier beat the Gauchos, 75-63, to end a six-year losing streak in Goleta.
