Celebrating Black History

Celebrations honoring Black History Month are popping up all over town, from the artistic to the enlightening to the just plain fun. A sample of this weekend’s offerings:

“The Afrikans Are Coming,” a cultural extravaganza with a taste of African food, crafts and entertainment at 6 p.m. At 8 p.m., performances begin with the Zadonu African Music and Dance Co., the Kiyira Ensemble and others.

From noon-5:30 p.m. Saturday, the Black Age of Comics Exhibit features comic book author-artist Turtel Onli, who will sign his comic books. Video presentations will feature creators of the Black Age; black comic books will be on sale for a $3 donation. Bak-Tu-Jua Gallery, 4330 Degnan Blvd., Leimert Park Village, Los Angeles. The Pomona Valley Alumnae’s 16th annual Black Culture Festival offers films, art, food, fashions, children’s programs, health screenings and more at Pomona Civic Center Plaza, 625 S. Garey Ave. Saturday, noon-4 p.m. Free. (909) 624-8623.

The annual African American Heritage Celebration, 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday at Angelus Plaza, gets moving with the Kuumpotu United Royal African Drum and Dance Co., the Shaluza Boot Dancers and Caribbean Experience musicians.

Members of the Chambers Family and Crenshaw Christian Center choirs also will perform, and a display by the William Grant-Still Museum includes African dolls and quilts.
