Demolition of the earthquake-damaged Pic ‘N’ Save store on Tapo Street in Simi Valley began late Wednesday, city officials said.

The work started after the company received a warning from city officials to either repair the building or tear it down, said Gaddis Farmer, a deputy director in the city’s public works department.

A quake-damaged Sears outlet next to the Pic ‘N’ Save remains abandoned. Although no specifics have been given, Sears officials recently informed the city that they plan to either renovate the building or tear it down, Farmer said.

City officials have notified Sears that they had exceeded a city deadline to clean up the abandoned building.

“We are certainly optimistic that Sears will also move forward,” he said.

Pic ‘N’ Save has indicated that they will relocate to another site in the city, Farmer said. The demolition work that began Wednesday will likely continue through the week, he said.
