GM Hughes Electronics Changes Name: The Los Angeles-based unit of General Motors Corp. said its new name is Hughes Electronics Corp., and that company’s entire defense group will now operate as Hughes Aircraft Co. The changes followed surveys that showed “most of our customers know us as Hughes, they don’t know us as GM Hughes,” said spokesman Richard Dore, adding that GM’s board approved the change. He also noted that Electronic Data Systems also does not include GM in its name despite also being owned by the auto maker. Hughes Electronics will keep GMH as its stock symbol, however, just as EDS uses the symbol GME.
