COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : No. 1 Saddleback Dominates Grossmont in Tennis
Saddleback College, the top-ranked men’s tennis team in the state, got a sweep in doubles and defeated No. 3 Grossmont, 7-2, in a nonconference match Friday at Saddleback.
Brian Gruner and David McMahon clinched the victory for Saddleback with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, giving the Gauchos (11-0) a 5-2 lead.
Brian Matek also picked up a key victory with a 6-4, 7-6 singles victory.
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Cypress 8, Orange Coast 0--Deborah Goddu threw only 50 pitches in six innings, allowing only one hit and lowering her earned-run average to a conference-leading .029 for Cypress (16-4, 5-1).
Fullerton 8, Golden West 0--Stephanie Mendoza struck out nine, allowing three hits in a complete game for Fullerton (13-3, 5-1).
She also was three for three with a home run, two runs scored, two RBIs and one stolen base. The Hornets are in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Cypress and Rancho Santiago.
Rancho Santiago 10, Saddleback 1--Christina Mazurie hit for the cycle, driving in two runs and scoring two for Rancho Santiago (14-7, 5-1).
In Orange Empire Conference swimming:
Saddleback 148, San Diego Mesa 119--Christy Schmidt won the 50 freestyle in a time of 27.92 for Saddleback (2-0).
