COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Moves to Semifinals of Tournament
UC Irvine won two of three doubles matches to provide the deciding point as the Anteaters beat UC Santa Barbara, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the UC Irvine-Marriott men’s tennis tournament Thursday at UCI.
Chris Tontz and Fred Bach won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, and Marc-Andre Tardif teamed with Julian Foxon to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-4, for the Anteaters (9-6), who will play Fresno State in the semifinals at 1 p.m. today at UCI.
Tardif lost his first No. 2 singles set to UC Santa Barbara’s Joe Barbarie, but won the next two to win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Bach beat Eddie Weiss, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, and Julian Foxon defeated Simon Kurth, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, for the Anteaters.
Fresno State swept Southwestern Louisiana, 7-0, in the quarterfinals and beat Idaho State, 7-0, in the first round.
The winner will face the winner of the match between South Alabama and Arkansas Little Rock Saturday in the final. South Alabama beat Colorado, 6-1, and Arkansas Little Rock beat Boise State, 5-2.
In nonconference baseball:
The Master’s 13, Southern California College 3--The Master’s pounded out 14 hits off four Southern California College pitchers and scored seven runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
SCC starter Matt Baker dropped to 0-3 and the Vanguards, who committed seven errors, fell to 9-22.
Steve Rogers (1-1) gave up one earned run and struck out six to earn the victory for The Master’s (12-12).
In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:
Southern California College 5-10, Concordia 0-0--In Game 1, Amy Lewis had two doubles, scored one run and had a run batted in. In the second game, Angie Vega went two for three with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs to lead sweep for the Vanguards (22-13, 4-2).
