NHL ROUNDUP : Bondra Streaks as the Capitals End Hot Month

It took Peter Bondra five seasons to learn the not-so-secret formula for scoring goals in the NHL.

“If you just keep the puck, you’re not going to get a goal,” Bondra said Friday night after extending his goal-scoring streak to seven games as the Washington Capitals ended a superb month with a 6-4 victory over Quebec at Landover, Md.

Bondra’s second goal of the night and 21st of the season gave the Capitals a two-goal cushion with 11:44 left.

Dale Hunter scored the go-ahead goal in the second period for the Capitals, whose 11-2-2 record in March was the best in the Eastern Conference. The six goals was a season high for Washington. The Capitals’ hot month coincided with the debut of rookie Jim Carey, who started every game. Carey stopped 16 shots in the game despite being pulled for nearly three minutes midway through it.

Quebec went 10-4-1 in March. Owen Nolan got his 24th goal for the Nordiques, one short of league-leader Jaromir Jagr of Pittsburgh.

St. Louis 4, San Jose 1--Brendan Shanahan had two goals and Al MacInnis and Adam Creighton one each as the Blues won their fourth in a row and continued their mastery of the Sharks at St. Louis.

The Blues are 3-0 this season against the Sharks, 13-1 lifetime.

Calgary 6, Edmonton 2--Theoren Fleury and Robert Reichel each scored twice and had an assist as the Flames won at Edmonton.

Edmonton lost its fourth in a row while going 0 for 9 in man-advantage situations.

Tampa Bay 2, Hartford 0--Daren Puppa stopped 25 shots for his first shutout of the season and rookie Alexander Selivanov scored his eighth goal as the Lightning defeated the Whalers at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Former Whaler Mikael Andersson also scored.

Toronto 3, Chicago 3--Dave Andreychuk’s second goal of the game, scored from a goal-mouth scramble with 48.1 seconds remaining in regulation and goalie Felix Potvin on the bench, gave the Maple Leafs a tie at Chicago.
