Fernando Valenzuela struggled in his debut for San Diego, giving up eight runs in two innings, and the Oakland Athletics went on to rout the Padres, 21-6, in Phoenix. The first seven A’s reached base safely against Valenzuela, signed last week as a free agent. “I just had bad control and bad command--all the pitches were up,” said Valenzuela, 34. “I was rushing a little bit in the first inning. I was anxious, but I think that’s normal.” . . . . Roger Clemens was scratched from his first spring start because of tendinitis in his throwing shoulder, jeopardizing his eighth consecutive opening-day assignment for the Boston Red Sox. “We’re just going to be cautious,” Manager Kevin Kennedy said in Fort Myers, Fla. “The right thing to do is wait.” . . . . Outfielder Kevin Bass, 35, has no intention of spending his summer with the Rochester Red Wings, even though he signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles. “Twelve years of major league experience should speak for itself,” he said. “It’s either the major leagues or my casa .”
