SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The wedding of a Pepperdine student that was supposed to take place in a large chapel was held instead this weekend in the intensive care unit of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Three members of the bride’s family--her stepfather and a brother and a sister--were killed Friday in an accident on the Golden State Freeway near Castaic as they on their way to Los Angeles for the wedding.

Her mother and two other brothers survived the accident and were being cared for in the intensive care unit at the hospital. They watched the proceedings from their beds.

“It was very solemn and sweet, and there was a feeling of hope and planning for the future,” said Barbara Myler, regional director of public affairs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family authorized church officials to speak about the wedding.

Anne Moses, wearing her wedding gown, and David Lindeland were married in a 15-minute Mormon ceremony at the hospital on Saturday, Myler said.

“This is a family of incredible strength and they are trying their best to look for the positive in a very tragic situation,” she said in an interview Tuesday.

Killed in the accident were Moses’ stepfather, Ronald, and her siblings, Jacob, 18, and Jacqueline, 12. The survivors were her mother, Jennifer, and two younger brothers, Ryan, 18, and Tyler, 12.

Jacob and Jacqueline were the twin siblings of Ryan and Tyler, respectively.

The family has declined requests to be interviewed and asked Newhall Memorial Hospital officials not to release any information about their medical condition.

Although the injured family members had recovered enough from their injuries to observe the ceremony, Jennifer had to whisper to her daughter because of an irritated throat, Myler said.

Moses’ grandparents and an uncle, plus Lindeland’s parents, were able to squeeze into the small intensive care room for the wedding, Myler said. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Bob Smith, who was originally scheduled to perform the wedding at a Mormon chapel in Westwood.

About 20 other friends and family members gathered in a hospital waiting room until the end of the ceremony before attending a hastily organized gathering at a Mormon church in Valencia.

“A (church) member from Castaic baked a wedding cake for the occasion,” Myler said.

The mood during the day was subdued, Myler said, but much of the conversation focused on the future of surviving family members instead of those who died.

“The tragedy was that three people died, but the miracle was three people lived,” she said.

The accident occurred at about 3 a.m. Friday on the southbound Golden State Freeway near Castaic when the family’s van brushed against the rear of a semi-trailer truck and flipped after swerving across the freeway. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.

Myler said Jennifer Moses has stated that she had a sudden problem while driving the van.

“She felt something happen with the right side of the car that she was not able to control,” Myler said.

Jennifer Moses and her two hospitalized children are hoping to be well enough by the end of the week to be transferred to a Sacramento hospital near their home in Auburn, Myler added.

Friends of the family have established a fund to help pay for medical and funeral expenses, Myler said. Donations may be sent to the Moses Family Fund, Valencia National Bank, 23620 Lyons Ave., Newhall 91321.
