ANALYSIS OF A MOVEMENT: On the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, observances have become more commercial and participation has waned . . . but supporters say the real measure of their success can be found in the air we breath--it’s cleaner now. And drinking water is purer. The anniversary was marked by concern that years of environmental progress may be rolled back by a Republican-led Congress. In local, state and national events Saturday, participants celebrated, but some also issued wake-up calls. (A32, B1)

OH, WHAT A NIGHT: Some high school students from the Antelope Valley rented a Metrolink train to take them to their prom in Los Angeles. There was red carpet at the train station, and the conductors dressed up in tuxedos for the occasion . . . Talk about traveling in style. (B1)

SAVING GRACES: A glimpse of the same kind of rescue equipment used by firefighters after the Oklahoma City bombing will be demonstrated at today’s Earthquake Preparedness Fair. . . . The three-day exhibition, which began Friday, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Los Angeles Zoo parking lot in Griffith Park. “A lot of the stuff that is being used in Oklahoma we’re using here,” said Capt. Vincent Cardinale of the city’s disaster preparedness unit in Sherman Oaks. “This includes fiber-optic cameras, listening devices and diamond chain saw blades.”

A DREAM COME TRUE: Former Crespi High football player Christian Fauria is now a Seattle Seahawk. Fauria was chosen by the National Football League franchise in the second round of Saturday’s draft (C17). . . . A third-team, All-America tight end at the University of Colorado, Fauria celebrated the good news with his family in Northridge.
