Ventura County’s largest Latino celebration takes place this weekend when the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Ventura County hosts its Cinco De Mayo Festival in Oxnard.

The event--a celebration tied to the victory of Mexican soldiers over a much larger force of French troops near the town of Puebla on May 5, 1862--will feature Mexican food and entertainment on various stages at College Park. Bands performing at the festival include Banda Toro, Latino top 40 artist Jorge Luis Cabrera, and Grupo Rebelede.

Ballet folkloricos from local high schools will perform at the festival, as will mariachi bands and the Channel Islands and Hueneme High School bands.

“We hope people can come out and see their neighbors perform as well as the big name bands,” said chamber Vice President Robert Sanchez. “This will help people to better understand Latino culture. In this county, chances are, you’re going to have at least one neighbor who is Hispanic.”

Last year, more about 20,000 people attended the event.

Admission to the celebration is $4 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. The opening celebration begins at noon on Saturday. For more information, call 486-0266.
