Sun Hires Satan Software Designer: Software designer Dan Farmer, who lost his job at Silicon Graphics Inc. because of his work on the controversial Satan software, has been rehired where he worked for three years previously. The Satan data security program, which Farmer co-designed, was both praised as a way for companies to find weaknesses in systems and denounced as a weapon that hackers could use to enter computer networks. Farmer was fired from Silicon Graphics a few days before he released the program on the Internet. At San Francisco-based Sun Microsystems Inc., Farmer will develop new programs to protect large computer networks against intruders. Farmer has agreed not to work on Satan on Sun’s time or equipment.
