TENNIS : Marshall Easily Handles Narbonne
The Marshall High Barristers moved a step closer to their fourth City Section 3-A Division tennis title in five years with a 22 1/2-7 win Tuesday over Narbonne in the quarterfinals.
Marshall won all three doubles matches at Griffith Park, led by top doubles players Mike Gasparian and Gordon Lee.
The Barristers’ top singles player, Noah Newman, improved his record to 13-0, defeating Jun Samia (6-2), Ohki Murai (6-1), Roger Cheng (6-0) and Shawyue Doong (6-0).
“I missed a lot of shots that I normally make,” Newman said. “(Jun Samia) played me really well.”
Sebastian Albelais (11-1), the No. 2 singles player, also won his four matches.
“I didn’t have to work hard at all except for (Jun Samia),” Albelais said. “Other than that it was like a walk in the park.”
Marshall will face Birmingham in the semifinals Monday at Studio City Racquet Centre.
Eagle Rock 27, Franklin 2 1/2--In another quarterfinal match, Corey Thai scored Franklin’s only point in the singles while doubles players Hoa Tran and Ying Rong scored 1 1/2.
“They steamrolled us, my kids played really well but they just couldn’t score,” Panther coach Geoff Rauen said.
