Rep. Sonny Bono (R-Palm Springs) will undergo surgery today to remove a tiny bone spur from the fourth vertebra of his neck.

Physicians at the House of Representatives say the congressman suffers from cervical impingement syndrome, said Frank Cullen, Bono’s spokesman. The routine surgery will keep Bono hospitalized for two to three days, Cullen said.

Bono has tried to delay the procedure for months. He finally gave in this week when anti-inflammatory drugs, therapy and a neck brace failed to improve his condition. The spur irritates a spinal nerve that causes a numbness in his left arm.
