Vehicle Towing Program to Begin

Ventura County officials have started a new program that allows them to remove an estimated 2,000 abandoned vehicles from private property in the county’s unincorporated area.

Under the Ventura County abandoned vehicle abatement program, Tri-County Auto Dismantlers Inc. of Santa Paula will pay the county a fee for the right to haul abandoned, wrecked or dismantled vehicles that could pose a potential hazard.

Tri-County was awarded a contract by the Board of Supervisors on March 21 to provide the service. The company has the right to sell the recyclable scrap materials.

By working with the state Department of Motor Vehicles, county officials will be able to notify owners before towing their vehicles. The owners will have 10 days to file an appeal.

After 10 days, Tri-County will tow the abandoned vehicle to its yard in Santa Paula.

Residents can report suspected abandoned vehicles by calling 654-2936.
