Times Staffers Among AP Award Winners

Los Angeles Times Life & Style writer Duane Noriyuki’s feature about the life of a homeless man and photographer Carolyn Cole’s pictures from Haiti won “best of show” honors as the top writing and photography in the annual Associated Press News Executives Council awards in Oakland.

Other Times winners included:

* First place in news reporting for the staff’s coverage of the Northridge earthquake.

* First place in features to Noriyuki for his story, titled “A Hard Fall From Grace.”

* First place in the picture story category to Cole for her photographs accompanying a story titled “Haiti’s Troubled Times.”

* First place, news graphic, to James Owens for “Flight to the Moon.”

* Second place, public service, to reporter David Willman for his story on Los Angeles’ subway budget problems.
