Two people were found shot to death in a blood-splattered alley off Vermont Street early Sunday in what appeared to be a murder-suicide, police said.

Olga Fragoso, 18, an Anaheim resident, was walking to work when she was confronted by an acquaintance identified as Jorge Arturo Enciso, 19, of Placentia, who shot her and then turned the gun on himself, said Sgt. Charles Chavez of the Anaheim Police Department.

The two bodies were found lying about four feet apart in an alley just north of the 100 block of West Vermont Street, authorities said. Fragoso, the mother of a 2 1/2-year-old girl, worked at a fast-food restaurant less than a block from where she was shot and was on her way to work, according to her family.

Fragoso’s distraught mother, Nancy Fragoso, was at a loss to explain the shootings. She said the man was a friend of her daughter’s, but she knew of no trouble between them.

“Why?” sobbed Nancy Fragoso, who lived with her daughter, granddaughter and two other women at the Rancho Victoria Apartments in the 200 block of West Vermont Street, two blocks from the shooting scene. “We didn’t have any enemies.”

Police were called to the scene at 6:25 a.m. by neighbors who heard gunshots, Chavez said. They found the two bodies in a pool of blood near a gray Dodge Challenger parked in the middle of the alley. The passenger’s door was open.

The car had been borrowed by Enciso, who drove it to the crime scene, Lt. Dave Severson said. A revolver believed to be Enciso’s was also found at the scene, Severson said.

Police believe Enciso was waiting in the alley and confronted Fragoso as she walked along Vermont to work at the nearby restaurant.

Friends and neighbors described Fragoso as a friendly, outgoing, hard-working parent.

Alex Hernandez, 20, Fragoso’s former boyfriend and the father of her daughter, was shocked to hear of the shooting Sunday.

“She worked hard, in the mornings, to help take care of our daughter,” Hernandez said. “I was very surprised when I heard about this.”

“She was a really nice person. She always said hi to everybody,” said Manuel Rivera, 30, the manager of the apartment complex where Fragoso lived. “When the lieutenant told me about [the shooting], I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘It’s ridiculous, we never had any problems with her.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

The restaurant manager refused to be interviewed Sunday.

The alley where the bodies were found runs between an apartment complex and a convenience store and empties onto Vermont in a neighborhood several blocks south of City Hall. One longtime resident said the neighborhood has been deteriorating lately.

“This used to be a very quiet neighborhood, but it’s changed,” said the woman, who has lived in the area for 16 years and has noticed more graffiti and more trouble in the streets. “Nowadays, there are a lot of things going on here. The [graffiti] is everywhere now. I’m planning to move because I have young kids and I want to protect them from this environment.”
