Hollis, suffering from tendinitis in his serving shoulder, was forced to serve underhanded last week, but he hardly missed a beat. After winning two of three sets in a 12-6 victory over Victor Valley, he won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, in a 10-8 victory over Laguna Beach in the section Division II playoffs. Hollis, who will play for USC next season, survived by bringing his opponents into the net with short serves and then winning points with passing shots. “They really didn’t know what to do,” he said.

* Magnolia, senior. Pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and drove in game’s only run with a double in a 1-0 playoff victory over San Gabriel.

* Valencia, senior. Shot par 72 at Sandpiper Golf Course, the low round of the day at the section team championship, helping Tigers to team title.

Track and field

* Brethren Christian, senior. Won three events at the Southern Section Division IV championships, the 800 meters in 1 minute 51.55 seconds, the 1,600 in 4:14.17 and the 3,200 in 9:41.35.

* San Clemente, seniors. Gardner had 27 kills and Bemus 20 in a four-game playoff victory over Fountain Valley.
