Too Much Red Tape, European Businesses Say: Companies singled out laws on tax administration, employment and the environment as the biggest problems, with more than half those surveyed finding regulations in those areas “unhelpful” or “very unhelpful,” according to a study by Unice, the Union of Industrial and Employers Confederation of Europe. “Regulations reduce the competitiveness of European companies by depressing innovation, inhibiting operating efficiency and slowing down the process of structural adjustment,” Unice President Francois Perigot told a news conference in Brussels. The study included surveys, workshops and interviews among 2,500 companies from 20 countries.
