AMERICAN LEGION ROUNDUP : Daryabigi Downs Van Nuys for 10-Count

Ray Daryabigi pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters as Valley North defeated Van Nuys, 10-1, in an American Legion District 20 baseball game at Chatsworth High on Wednesday.

Daryabigi (2-0) walked only two batters for Valley North (4-2), which got two hits each from Tony Ardito, Matt Evanson and Andrew Silver.

Valley North scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pat Rizotti’s two-run single gave Valley North a 7-1 lead and Randy Whitson followed with a two-run triple for a 9-1 advantage.

San Fernando 7, Studio City 1--Julio Sandoval pitched a two-hitter and Javier Navarro had three hits and four runs batted in for San Fernando in a District 20 game at San Fernando High.

Sandoval (2-2) struck out five, walked three and gave up an unearned run for San Fernando (4-4).

Sunland-Tujunga 7, Valley South 0--Michael Gallegos and Abe Ortez combined on a one-hitter for Sunland-Tujunga in the District 20 game at Tujunga Senior Field.

Gallegos (1-0) allowed one hit, struck out one and walked two in six innings before being relieved by Ortez.

Kyle Spielbuehler had three RBIs for Sunland-Tujunga (3-3).

West Hills 5, North Hollywood West 2--Brandon Gray (2-0) struck out two and walked six in 5 2/3 innings, but allowed only two hits in the District 20 game.

North Hollywood West (1-7) stranded 11 runners.

Gray’s brother, Chris, got his second save when he relieved with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth and struck out Edgar Pineda and Jose Avila.

An RBI double by Kevin Lohman in the first gave West Hills (5-0) a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Hamill’s two-run single in the third made it 3-0.

Encino 10, Newhall 1--Jon Cuccias (1-0) pitched a five-hitter and struck out six as Encino handed Newhall (7-1) its first loss of the season in a District 20 game at Canyon High.

Andy Campanella had three hits and five RBIs for Encino (2-4). His three-run home run in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and his two-run single in the seventh capped a six-run inning.

Antelope Valley South 9, Antelope Valley North 2--David Nichols drove in three runs, and his RBI single in the third broke a 2-2 tie. A two-run double by Jeremy Holiday keyed a five-run seventh inning for South (5-4).

Sean Douglas (1-0) pitched four innings, while Tyler Kincaid struck out five in three innings to get his first save.

Granada Hills East 10, Mission Hills 7--Adam Rofer had three hits, an RBI and scored twice and Jon Garland had two hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth that gave Granada Hills East (3-2) a 6-1 lead in a District 20 game at Alemany High.

Verdugo Hills 8, Glendale 3--Verdugo Hills (6-2) scored four runs on five consecutive singles in the first.

Loren Geller, who was three for four, had a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Amador Solis had a two-run single for Glendale (5-3), while Ron Pirayoff (2-1) took the loss.

Central Valley 7, Woodland Hills East 0--Central Valley (5-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Jared Gold doubled in two runs.

Mike Schultz (2-1) pitched six shutout innings, with three strikeouts and two walks.

Palmdale 1, Quartz Hill 0--Robert Rosati outgunned Brian Garcia in a pitchers’ duel.

Rosati struck out four and walked three, but coaxed Quartz Hill (3-6) into 12 fly-ball outs. Garcia struck out four, walked one and had two double plays behind him.

Thomas Martinez of Palmdale (3-6) singled and eventually scored on a passed ball in the second inning.
