New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said he had talked with Darryl Strawberry’s agent, Bill Goodstein, but that a report in the Record of Hackensack, N.J., that a one-year deal was near was premature.

Said Goodstein: “I have not an iota of doubt that Strawberry will be signed by the weekend.”

Strawberry’s 60-day suspension for testing positive for cocaine ends June 23.

Yankee General Manager Gene Michael said he isn’t involved in the talks.

Baseball players and owners agreed to postpone the teams’ trial on unfair labor practice charges until July 24. It was the third postponement of the trial, an indication, said administrative law judge Edwin Bennett, of a desire to resolve the problems outside the courtroom. However, the two sides have not negotiated since March 30, the day before an injuction was issued ordering the two sides to proceed under the expired bargaining agreement.
