It’s Your Life / People, Places and Things to do. : Nothing Shy About This Pair’s Sculpture
The sculpture by David and Linda Elder, partners in medium and marriage, may be more familiar than most people realize, perched as it often is on their Ventura hillside property above the Ventura Freeway by Seaward Avenue. But for a more upfront and personal view, head down to the Art City Gallery, where the couple are currently showing a number of their works.
With her impressive Point Concepcion series, Linda shows frankly depicted female nudes in bronze and aluminum. These figures, detailed down to the last ripple of sinew and jutting limb, are not at all coy, coming from a position of strength.
David, by contrast, works with wood, often graced with polychrome hues and leaning toward indigenous cultures, as in “Spirit of Hawaii” and “Sioux Dreamer,” and is prone to work the cracks between reality and mythology.
Even if you find the subject matter here a bit draining, this is mostly good-looking and unapologetic art. It refuses to be politely brushed aside.
