TUSTIN : Measure R Condemned as a ‘True Injustice’

The City Council on Monday passed a resolution condemning Measure R, the proposed half-cent increase in Orange County’s sales tax, as “a true injustice.”

The resolution, proposed by Councilman Jeffery M. Thomas, states that “it would be a true injustice to force the citizens to reward the county for failing to live up to its obligations.”

The money raised by the new levy would be used to help the county recover from bankruptcy.

The resolution chastises the Orange County Board of Supervisors for squandering funds it was entrusted to keep safe and then asking residents and businesses to pay higher taxes to restore the county’s financial stability.

The resolution goes on to say that the increase would bring the sales tax rate to 8.25%--among the highest in the state--and would still “perpetuate the status quo that caused the crisis.”

The measure is on the Tuesday ballot.
