THOUSAND OAKS : Design Team Plans Golf Course Repairs

A team of professional golf course designers will spend the next six months developing a master plan to renovate the watering system, clubhouse facilities, tees and greens at the Los Robles public course in Thousand Oaks.

The Thousand Oaks City Council voted unanimously this week to approve an $80,000 study by the Halsey Daray Golf team. The planned renovation of the Los Robles course is expected to take place gradually over the next 10 years.

Course officials say Los Robles is starting to show its age after 32 years of heavy use by local golfers. On average, 350 golfers tee off on the course everyday.

The course generates about $200,000 a year, which is put into a capital improvements fund.

About $2 million from that fund was used for construction of the Civic Arts Plaza.

“We need to look at the golf course for what it is,” Councilwoman Judy Lazar said. “It is a city asset. The longer we postpone this renovation, the greater potential we have for it to fall into disrepair.”

“This cannot be done readily on a piecemeal basis,” Lazar added. “We need professionals to do this. I can garden in my back yard, but God forbid you let me loose on a golf course.”
