Sanday Wins Amateur With 36th-Hole Birdie
Former Cal State Northridge golfer Jeff Sanday sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the 36th and final hole Saturday to defeat John Pate of Santa Barbara and win the 84th annual California Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Sanday, 24, was 5-up after shooting 68 on the first 18 holes. But the 35-year-old Pate, older brother of PGA veteran Steve Pate, was a stroke behind Sanday with a bogey at 17 in the afternoon round.
Pate was within five feet of a birdie on the par-five 18th after a nice bunker shot, but Sanday’s birdie clinched the match.
It was the longest final in the tournament since 1973.
